Councillors, charities and members of the community joined together to mark Commonwealth Day.

Mayor of Harrow Councillor Nana Asante led the flag raising ceremony yesterday outside Harrow Borough Council's Civic Centre in Station Road, Harrow.

She was joined by leader of the council Susan Hall, the borough's Representative Deputy Lieutenant, police Borough Commander Simon Ovens, Members of the Royal British Legion and others.

Cllr Asante said: “I am pleased to have raised the flag this morning, supporting this year’s national ‘Fly A Flag for the Commonwealth’ project.

“Today recognises the importance and the value of the Commonwealth, a club of sovereign states joined by a shared history and respect. I hope this fosters greater understanding among Commonwealth citizens.”

Cllr Hall said: “With Harrow being a diverse borough, where 88 different languages are spoken and where many come from the various Commonwealth countries, this day reaffirms our respect to all citizens of the Commonwealth and celebrates its diversity.”

Harrow joined with councils from across the country for first annual flag raising event.
