A woman crowned a mum of the year for her part in setting up a citizenship school met Prime Minister David Cameron.

Ranu Mehta-Radia, of Pinner, was one of seven mothers from across the country who won the Tesco Mum of the Year award for her work founding the Sai School of Harrow, based at Shaftesbury High School.

She attended a reception at 10 Downing Street yesterday ahead of International Women’s Day tomorrow.

Mrs Mehta-Radia said: “I am delighted to be invited to this special event and be in the same room as some incredible women, and the Prime Minister of course. Serving the nation is a priority to me and I want to spread our message to all children and young people.”

The 56-year-old set up the Saturday school nearly 20 years ago to help bring together Hindu children from across the borough.

Today it has 300 pupils and is run by 40 volunteers, many of whom are former pupils.

Debbie Chernin, Tesco Mum of the Year manager, said: “We are extremely proud to be holding the Tesco Mum of the Year Awards for the ninth year. It is a privilege to be able to recognise the achievements of an amazing woman and mum like Ranu.

"The Sai School now has children from all across London in its unique educational programme.  This truly is an incredible accomplishment.”

Mrs Mehta-Radia will be awarded with the Enterprising Mum Award at a ceremony at The Savoy hotel in central London on Sunday, March 23.
