A primary school pupil is in with a chance of being crowned young musician of the year as part of a national competition.

Jodie Bloom, who attends North London Collegiate School, in Edgware, has made it to the final of the Emunah Young Musician of the Year and will perform in the final next month.

The nine-year-old was runner up in the woodwind and brass section of the London heats playing the saxophone.

Ms Bloom, who is in year five, said: “I was over the moon and shocked when I heard the news. I never expected to get through to the final. I was taking part purely for the experience.

“I loved playing my chosen piece, Tango Til You Drop, as I know it very well.

“I heard about the competition through my school. I practise three or four times a week, depending on how much free time I have and would love to be a professional musician or singer one day.”

The final concert of the competition will take place on Sunday March 9 at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

The Emunah charity supports 10,000 children in Israel who come from difficult backgrounds through its network of residential homes, counselling services, high schools and day care centres.
