Trustees of a world-famous museum say plans to expand could be the start of “wonderful times”.

The Heath Robinson Museum, in West House, Pinner, is currently based in the cartoonist and illustrator's former home but plans to add a new gallery to the site.

Harrow Borough Council’s cabinet members are due to discuss the proposals this evening.

William Heath Robinson was best known for his drawing of eccentric but logical contraptions, and he lived in Paines Lane, Pinner, before the Second World War.

Veronica Chamberlain, a trustee of the museum, said: “It will be huge because it’s so important to preserve part of Harrow’s rich history.

“Children who come to visit the museum absolutely love him - his drawings are very funny and always bring a smile or a laugh to your face.

“Unfortunately, the house has fallen into disrepair over the last few years but building a new museum next to it marks the start of wonderful times ahead.”

West House, a stately home, was restored 15 years ago when residents helped raise money to save it, and it was reopened as a gallery, a cafe and a meeting room.

Last year, it was awarded a £1.3million grant from the National Heritage Lottery Fund to create a gallery and activity room for schools and children.

Organisers say the new design is “modern” and will be able to give Heath’s work the justice it deserves.

But they need to raise another £200,000 - and so far people as far away as Beijing and San Francisco have donated sums of up to £1,000.

Ms Chamberlain added: “We’ve been working hard to fundraise and it’s going really well. Everyone’s so excited about this project.”
