20-minutes free parking scheme for Harrow to go ahead in Tory budget

Harrow Times: Last year's free parking trial took place in Rayners Lane Last year's free parking trial took place in Rayners Lane

A 20-minute free parking scheme will be rolled out across the borough, it was announced today.

Harrow Borough Council leader Councillor Susan Hall revealed the plans for the scheme ahead of budget discussions this month.

The Conservative administration says it has found the money in its budget to introduce the scheme across the whole borough.

It will include the upgrading of many of Harrow’s on-street ticket machines to include a keypad for motorists to input their car registration number, which the council hopes will prevent the scheme being abused.

Drivers will also only be able to get free 20-minutes' parking once a day.

The scheme was trialled by the previous Independent Labour administration around Rayners Lane in the summer last year.

However it was cancelled by the incoming Conservative group after it was found the scheme would cost the authority too much money and was being abused by motorists.

This pre-May election PR proves that the arguments put forward by the elected-mayor style Tory administration against the free parking were bogus - who could believe what this administration says or does!

Another interesting way for Susan Hall to get publicity after hoodwinking the community with the help of Independent Labour Group. Susan Hall is a arrogant "Take Harrow over by deception" manipulative Tory leader.

Would you trust someone who only few months ago stopped the same free parking scheme by saying after it was found the scheme would cost the authority too much money and was being abused by motorists? What is different now? Oh it is local election year.

It seems the present administration can do nothing right according to some die-hard sceptics.I am sure our Rayners Lane residents will be delighted ,even if this privilege has been reduced to free parking once a day for 20 minutes.

On the other hand,we have the advantage of having it rolled out throughout the borough.Seems fairer.Naturally,we all want MORE and more---just pleased the Cabinet have managed to find a compromise to help Harrovians in whatever measure is affordable.Perhaps if we manage to reduce FRAUD substantially we might find even more funds to extend 20 minutes to maybe 30 minutes. Will have to wait and see what transpires..After all,The proof of the pudding is in the eating!

Got to love people and their political blinkers, you can see the difference this council is making to borough already in a short space of time. Labour are too busy looking after their narrow wedge of voters to give a stuff about the rest of us.

Susie last year you said the council would lose an estimated £541,000 a year in pay-and -display income and £310,000 in fines from parking tickets. With the additional cost of upgrading all the ticket machines even though last year you were planning to remove machines to reduce maintenance costs, these figures do not add up. (£4.69 million not the £2 million reported) “it is envisaged that he first machines could be rolled out in early March”
Susie I envisage that this is another bold attempt to solicit votes…

I also love people with their political blinkers. They have forgotten that the free parking idea was of The Labour Party and that The Tories under the leadership of Susan Hall (after garbing it from the Independent Labour Group) made a arrogant decision to stop the scheme, Now the same Susan Hall is promising free parking for 20 minutes but only for a year and not as Labour has intended this was for longer period,

Then again the free parking promised is only on the main roads and not on side streets or secondary roads. There will be no free 20 minutes parking and the cost of parking is going up.

We must thank the Independent Labour Group for selling the community to the Tories. The Labour Group is no different as there is love hate relationship between all political parties.
