Work on a new Muslim community centre costing £8million is set to begin soon.

The new Salaam Centre will be built on the site of the North Harrow Assembly Hall, Station Road, and will include fitness area, sports hall, multimedia room, prayer hall and restaurant.

On Sunday, January 19, work on the new building for the Muslim community will officially begin.

Project leader Dr Nizar Merali said: "I really think this project sets the standard for the future."

"We are working to provide an environment where we will enable warmth, thought and creativity through the open interaction of users of The Salaam Centre."

Forgive me for saying so Rabbitz but I was recently assured by a serving Councillor that this new centre will be available for ALL faiths to use and that it will not be just for the Muslim community. It is a Muslim community centre which has provision to be inclusive and welcoming to the rest of our community.Just as we have at Harrow Central Mosque.

I am sure local folk will respect their wishes as well and try to use this as a positive opportunity to build trust and friendship thus helping bridge the gap which exists in some minds.

It certainly is for the community but i feel its only going to be for the muslim community which is fair enough i have no problem with that in the begining it was publicised as a community centre for all faiths i think its dishonest to claim that why would people who are not moslem go there? All we ask for is honesty the planning permission was rubber stamped with the for all faiths declaration and now its a moslem community centre, i remember going to different events at the halls now they are lost forever.

This was meant to be a multi faith community construction. And now its a muslim community center (lets face it ... which means ONLY for muslims). Once again we have been lied too. During planning of this site, it was all ways refered to as a multi faith community hall. A complete lie. However in Harrow council greelight this should be fired. Harrow council cannot be trusted.

Harrow Dude says...

The Salam Centre web site says,
"The Salaam Centre will be open to people of all ethnic and religious backgrounds and thus will widen the scope of the charity to benefit a greater proportion of the local inhabitants of Harrow. The aim of the project is to bring the whole community together, whether it is creating harmonious, interactive and vibrant youth who would develop into committed citizens, or providing services for young and old throughout Harrow."

So is this just a case provocative journalism or just plain lazy reporting.
