Vulnerable older people across the borough will be getting free electric blankets and slippers to stay warmer this winter.

Officers from Harrow Borough Council have been calling more than 400 older people known to be potentially vulnerable during the Christmas period.

The council winter warmer campaign is also offering people electric blankets, slippers and basic home insulation and invited people over 65 to a series of lunch clubs.

Cabinet member for health and wellbeing Simon Williams said: “The weather is very changeable at the moment so we want to get help to those who need it before a hard spell really bites.

“This is all about just checking with those potentially at risk to let them know the council is ready to step in and help.

“The lunch clubs have the underlying aim of providing some good cheer and company at a time when people might be at home with little contact, particularly if family members live far away.”
