Stanmore college student Abdul Barekzai wins Jack Petchey award
A disabled college student has been given an award for his positive attitude and hard work.
Abdul Barekzai, a student at Stanmore College, was announced as winner of a Jack Petchey award, which recognise the hard work of young people in schools around the capital both academically and for effort.
He said: “I was surprised to receive this award. I had always heard of other students who had won the award and their story for winning, and I am happy to be a winner.
“Some people think because you’re in a wheelchair that you can’t do sport, and I just wanted to prove these people wrong.
“My favourite sport is basketball and I will carry on playing sports, because it’s something I enjoy and when someone says you can’t, you should always try and prove them wrong.”
The Jack Petchey awards recognise the hard work of young people in school both academically and effort of students.
