Harrow dog owners warned of 'kennel cough' outbreak
A vet has warned dog owners of a highly contagious infection that could spread to their pets.
Samantha Bloomfield, a vet at the Goddard Veterinary Group in, High Road, Harrow Weald, is warning animal lovers of kennel cough which has been seen in a number of dogs recently.
Symptoms include a harsh, dry cough and, in this instance, a yellow discharge from the nose.
In severe cases the bug can cause pneumonia.
Mrs Bloomfield said: "Kennel cough spreads very easily. It can be from direct contact between dogs but we are seeing cases where there hasn't been any contact but the dog has been walked in high dog traffic areas, such as local parks and woods.
“The number of cases we're seeing suggests we're dealing with quite a major outbreak.”
She also advised owners to avoid mixing their pets with high numbers of unvaccinated dogs and if concerned to visit their vet for a simple vaccination.
