Dentist Dr Bhupendra C Khiroya to retire after serving the people of Harrow for 40 years
A dentist due to retire after serving the community for nearly 40 years says he will be sad to leave.
Dr Bhupendra C Khiroya has run his dentist surgery on the corner of Pinner Road and Cornwall Road since 1974.
Looking back over his career, he recalls being one of the first immigrants in a smaller, closer-knit Harrow.
Dr Khiroya said: “I have loved my time here over the years and I have really enjoyed helping people.
“When I first arrived here, Harrow was still a small village and I was one of the first Indian dentists in the area. It has changed a lot but the people have always been so nice.
“I have had several generations of families come through here. People who were children when they first arrived here are now bringing their grandchildren.
“I tried to make it as friendly as possible for people to come here and we would never refuse to help anyone.
“I’m very proud of my time here. I am slightly downhearted to be leaving but I will always have very fond memories.”
Dr Khiroya came to the UK in 1967 from Uganda and first set up a surgery in his family living room at his home in Finchley.
He and his family then moved to Hatch End in 1981 where he still lives today.
Gail Chinnery, 61, who was a patient at the surgery since the 1960s before Dr Khiroya took over, still returns to the surgery in Pinner Road for her appointments.
She said: “There has always been a family atmosphere here and it is very much part of the community.
“We moved away to Aylesbury but we still come back here. He always puts you at ease during your appointment, making a slightly daunting trip to the dentist better.”
Fellow patient Alan Van Noey, 80, said: “It’s an end of an era really. We’re like a big family here and the door is always open to you.”
