Harrow Borough Council to support women's centre
Harrow Borough Council says it will continue to support the “fantastic work” of the Harrow Women’s centre.
The comments come after staff at the centre said it was in crisis and under threat of closure due to the loss of council funding.
The authority's director of community and culture Marianne Locke said: “Harrow is fortunate to have voluntary organisations like Harrow Women’s Centre making important contributions to our community.
“Unfortunately there is a limited amount of money to go round so we have to make tough decisions each year.
“The Council’s Grants Advisory Panel makes the final decision on funding for voluntary organisations, based on a point-scoring system to assess each bid, and their decision is open to appeal.
“Harrow Council continues to provide support in recognition of the fantastic work carried out by Harrow Women’s Centre.
“This has included helping the charity to bring in its own sources of revenue, for example, by putting it in touch with appropriate organisations who wish to rent some meeting space, and we are looking at ways to help them minimise their accommodation costs.”
