Harrow MP joins calls for review into pressure on London’s A&E departments
An MP has joined politicians from across the capital in calling for a review abour increased pressure on accident and emergency services.
MP for Harrow West Gareth Thomas joined with Labour MPs, London Assembly Members, councillors and NHS staff to deliver a letter to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt MP.
The letter raises concerns about the pressure on A&E units across the capital, calling for a review by the Secretary of State into medical evidence behind the proposed closure and downgrade of units at eight hospitals.
Mr Thomas said: “Northwick Park Hospital is under enormous pressure, with people in Harrow suffering longer waiting times as a result, yet the Health Secretary seems intent on closing A&Es across London, seriously adding to the problem.
“The Health Secretary needs to think again, we need a clear plan to tackle the pressures London hospitals are facing.”
The letter says the number of people waiting more than four hours in A&E departments has been steadily rising since the last general election.
The politicians argue that when Labour left office, A&E was performing well with 98 per cent of patients seen within four hours, but since the election the number waiting for longer has more than doubled.
The letter ends by calling for Mr Hunt to personally review all the ongoing closures or downgrade proposals, on a case-by-case basis, in the light of the very latest medical evidence.
