A charity in Stanmore which provides transport for wheelchair users is appealing for more volunteer drivers.

Barbara's Bus Fund made the call on the day Harrow East MP Bob Blackman visited the charity at its office at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.

He said the organisation provided a superb service and was happy to support the work it does.

Mr Blackman said: “Today will be a brand new experience that I look forward to.

“They enable people who would otherwise be stuck at home to get out and live a full and active life.”

The charity currently has 20 volunteer drivers who take wheelchair bound people on local day trips.

Friends, family members and carers can also use one of its nine vehicles, provided the driver is between 25 and 75.

Julia Pryor, the charity’s co-ordinator, is one of three part-time office staff and said the charity needs more drivers so more people can use the service.

She said: “We’d like to get more volunteer drivers because it would take pressure off the existing ones and we can get more people out more often."

The fund was started in 1968 by Barbara Werndley and currently has 200 users.
