Ten Harrow students have each been awarded £1,000 in recognition of their academic successes.

The University of Westminster media, art and design students who live in Harrow were each given the money as part of the university’s Academic Awards for Excellence scheme.

Award winner Reena Chadee said: “It is great to have my potential recognised, but I am most excited to go to the local shop and buy nice food rather than cheap beans on toast.

“Hard work really does pay off. Literally”

Overall, the Academic Awards for Excellence have invested £300,000 in students across the University of Westminster, £52,000 of which has been given to students in Harrow.

Academic success has its own rewards. Why is the University of Westminster throwing away £10,000 in this way, especially in these tough financial times?

Fantastic. Well done! Some of us know how hard you've worked. Don't let bitter individuals get you down.

@SAJG - At the moment, academic success does not necessarily have its own rewards - just look at graduate unemployment levels. But perhaps the money would have been better spent by telling the award winners that the money would have to go towards equipment and books that are an essential part of their courses. Despite that, well done to all the winners.

@ipsofacto I'm sure all of these students deserve to get good, well paid jobs when they leave university. But £1,000 each as well? Surely there are better uses for a university to spend £10,000, such as teaching facilities or bursaries for poorer students. Or even reducing fees. We are always hearing how universities are operating at the breadline, so it's difficult to see how this is the best use of limited funds.
