Police are appealing for help tracing a man they want to speak to in connection with an unprovoked assault on New Year’s Eve.

British Transport Police have released CCTV images of the man they want to speak to in connection with the assault, which took place at 1.15am on a westbound Piccadilly line train between Sudbury Town and Sudbury Hill.

A 24-year-old man from Harrow was travelling home on the tube after an evening with friends when four men entered the carriage and one smashed a beer bottle over his head.

The victim needed stitches for two cuts about his right eye and one to the bridge of his nose.

Det Con Denis Mahoney said: “We’ve carried out a number of enquiries to try to establish the man’s identity, including speaking to witnesses and circulating images on police intelligence systems, but to no avail so far.

“If you recognise this man, or have any information that could help our investigation, please contact us.”

Anyone with information should contact British Transport Police on Freefone 0800 40 50 40 quoting B14 of January 2 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
