Big Hug Foundation organises candlelit vigil in central London for Indian gang rape victim

A Wembley charity is organising a candlelit vigil for an Indian gang rape victim.

The Big Hug Foundation is working with the CAREducation Trust to organise a candle memorial in Tavistock Square, central London, at 12pm on Saturday.

The event will be held in memory of a medical student who died after being gang raped in Delhi on December 16.

It will give Londoners the chance to show their support for the injustices faced by Indian women.

It is hoped that it will also raise awareness of the problems some Indian women face as a result of inequality.

It would a fitting memorial to this young lady if laws and attitudes towards women were changed. It would be good if the new laws could be named after the victim and then she would never be forgotten.

Will the rapists also be charged with manslaughter?

jackdaw, why should they be charged with manslaughter when they murdered their poor victim?

It is the sad state of India where a rape occurs every 26 minutes. We pay condolences to the family of the young medical student who was raped, assaulted brutally and finally died recently.

It is more than 28 years in 1984 Genocide the Sikh Women and minors who were raped and killed and still to date no leaders and thugs have been charged or punished because they all belonged to the ruling Congress government.

The people of India have to rise and end corruption which according to the UN is one of most corrupt country in the world where the services of PM,minsters, judges,MPs, civil servants, medical services are bought and sold at whims.

They have been charged with murder as well as gang-rape, robbery, kidnapping etc etc etc. It is not just about injustices towards Indian women, but South Asian women as a whole that have to live with this all the time. And women of the world. The will get the death penalty, which i frankly think is too good for them after what they did to this poor young woman.

Attitudes towards women in Indian society as a whole need to be challenged. Don't for one minute beleive that this attitude isnt prevalent in Asian culture in the U.K. Yes, we have laws in this country that allow women to get justice if they are discriminated against or god forbid, raped. However, there are many Indians in this country who still beleive that a woman's place is in the home, and the idea that women bring shame on their families and their communities if they step out of line is commonplace. Indians themselves have to change their mind sets, You cannot just blame the government. Indian women need to raise their sons with respect for women, and challenge any behaviour that suggests otherwise. They must stop bringing up precious princes and accepting that having a girl is as much of a blessing as having a boy. Even today an Indian woman birthing a boy is celebrated over one that births a girl. Only then can we have a glimmer of hope for the future of Indian women. I can say this because I am an Indian woman and can bear witness to this attitude.

Very informative post Rani and more power to you to bring about change.

Perhaps the mothers and fathers of rapists ought to be fined and publically shamed for teaching bad cultural attitudes to their sons.

Also perhaps there ought to be a schools programme that teaches young children to respect both men and women equally.

Jack I hear what you say but truly, all the good teaching of attitudes starts in the home. Parents are the best placed to nurture their children's attitudes towards all sorts of things, including respect for women. We cannot continue to makes this a government problem or indeed one we palm off on teachers. A healthy attitude change will come. It has alredy begun in India and Indians living in the west will follow the lead. The irony of the whole situation is that the basic teachings contained within the hindu holy scriptures do not advocate that women are inferior. Infact there are many female deities to whom men and women pray, so it beggars belief that such prmitive thinking can be given so much support from a nation imbedded in religious doctrine! I can only hope that this sad case will highlight the casue and even when the worlds glare is taken off India, that it continues to punish crime against women. As I am writing this, I read that an MP has today raped a woman in a village India but on this occasion the villagers took control and thrashed the man invovled. The police have arrested him. Would they have done that if this poor young girls fateful plight had not brought this heinous crime to the worlds attention? Hopefully, he will be tried and the fact that he is a government official will not automatically give him an acquittal for the cost of a bribe. I live in hope of the worlds largest democracy finally ridding iteself of courrpution and sleaze.

How do you leap from parents inculcating " bad cultural attitudes to sons" to the committal of rape?

Jack it goes back to not seeing women as anything more than sexual objects therefore committing rape is not such a heinous crime to these individuals. .

I hope this poor woman is now at peace and her family and friends get the justice they deserve. Unfortunately in the news yesterday an almost exact same crime happened again on another poor young woman! Men all over the world, regardless of religion, you need to wake up to the fact that women are your equals!
