Missiles thrown at buses

POLICE are investigating after vandals hurled bricks and rubble at buses and through the windows of people's homes on the Rayners Lane estate.

During the past fortnight, windows have been smashed at 11 homes in the area, with Austin Road particularly affected by the attacks.

A further 11 attacks on buses travelling through the estate have been reported, with two windows smashed and significant damage done to the bodywork of the buses as they were pelted with bricks.

Sergeant Mark Slawson, in charge of the Roxbourne Safer Neighbourhood Team, is investigating the incidents.

He said: "The first week of the school holidays went by all right. But then I think youths and children started to get a bit bored and started throwing bricks.

"It's a serious problem, and we are trying to address it."

Sergeant Slawson, who joined the ward team at the start of April, said some people have been sitting in their living rooms when bricks have come through their windows and just missed their heads.

He said the bricks and pieces of rubble being used as missiles are coming from the debris being left by the Rayners Lane estate regeneration scheme, and he has been unable to get it removed.

His team has sent out letters to all residents on the estate, informing them of the problem and telling people the police are investigating.

He said: "We hope the letter being put out will have got the message across to those responsible that we are looking into it and taking these acts extremely seriously."

In one incident, on Monday, April 21, at around 6pm, a brick smashed a window in a home in Austin Road while the owners were at home.

A bottle was then thrown through the smashed window and this has been taken away by police for forensic tests.

They are hoping DNA taken from the bottle will lead them to the culprit.

Sergeant Slawson asked anybody with information about the attacks to speak to police at their regular surgery, every Wednesday between noon and 2pm at the Beacon Centre, in Scott Crescent.

Sergeant Slawson said: "I would really like people to make use of the surgery, come and speak to us and we can tackle issues like this that are affecting people on the estate."

so next time I am bored, I'll get my bricks out and start smashing up some people's windows.
This isn't boredom, this is young'ns knowing that they can do what they want and only get a tickle on the wrist while these poor people have to live in fear. These chumps need a good kick in.

I have it on good authority that most of the trouble being caused down on the estate is by pikeys. If this is a case, good luck with the forensic tests on that bottle. They are all inter-bred and all have the same DNA. Place was always a dumb, now they have a housing committee..... Leave it alone for long enough and it will all turn back into the marsh it originally was. Hence the viaduct.
