Readers: Do not slash squash courts

MORE than three quarters of Harrow Times readers who responded to our latest poll support the campaign to save Harrow Squash Club.

Of the respondents, 77 per cent do not believe there should be just two squash courts at the planned new leisure centre, on the Byron Hall site, in comparison to the eight found in the old facility.

The eight courts are in use throughout the week, and less courts could cause the popular squash club to fold.

Harrow Council's controversial plans, which were announced in November, were supported by just 13 per cent of voters in our poll.

Harrow Council

GIVE US A SPORTING CHANCE

The health of the borough is being dismantled in Harrow as eight squash courts are knocked down to make way for TWO!!
This sporting equation does not add up.
For the short and long term benefits to the residents of Harrow please look at the figures again; re-evaluate the costs and rebuild for the future.
Sporting logic cries out for a re-calculation of the plans.
Please more squash courts for a popular and ever growing sport
A healthy Harrow is a safer Harrow.

There is a requirement by the Council for all community services to be developed in a responsive way to meet the local needs.
The proposal of the New Byron Park Leisure Centre will have a reduction of leisure facilities, which in turn have a negative impact on the health of Harrow service users.
The planned new pool while successfully reflecting the needs of the club in being 8 lanes wide and 25 metres long will actually be narrower in lane width which will mean that swimmers will not be able to train effectively in the present training structure.
The planned learner pool will again be smaller and again not reflective of the current government initiatives in encouraging participation in sport in the early years.
Our need to host competitive swimming gala’s – which draws people in to the area - in many towns and cities around the country - and has a financial spinoff for the community, will be restricted by the proposed lack of parking and limited spectator seating planned in the new facility.
In short we are fully supportive of the need to update and improve the facilities within the borough, but we feel the new proposal does not reflect effectively the needs of the community and the swimming club.
