(Island/Drop the Gun) ****

Following their raw, pleading and largely acoustic efforts on 2005's Howl, BRMC have rediscovered their roar and gone hard at its follow up. We already know they're not scared of gigantic riffs and Baby 81 positively spews them from every corner.

The sinister strains of 666 Conducer take a lead (and a Marshall stack) from the vaults of Led Zeppelin; Took Out a Loan has a John Squire-like squawl; while the hypnotic, bluesy drone of Berlin recalls the Verve's earliest psychedelic excursions and lead single Weapon of Choice is a grown up cousin of their own Love Burns.

It's not all heady trips to the outer reaches though, Window offers some piano-led respite and album-closer Am I Only blends the granite power with delicate melody and structure.
