Personal Overview - Elected on a 29% swing in this traditionally safe Labour seat once held by Ken Livingstone. She become on election the youngest sitting MP in the House of Commons at that time. Has a career background as a scientist and scientific policy advisor, including evaluating public policy innovation and science issues for a number of other European Governments. Politically, she has Local Government experience as a Councillor at Islington BC and has been a member of the Party's National Policy Committee. Gained her first political office in November 2004 as a Shadow Spokesman for London before being promoted to cover Communities and Local Government in 2005, was further promoted to cover Education and Skills in the initial Menzies Campbell reshuffle. When the Education Department was split in 2007, she was given the shadow Innovation, Universities and Skills portfolio. Was promoted in the initial Nick Clegg reshuffle before being moved to cover the Housing portfolio in October 2008. Entered the coalition Government in 2010 at the Department for Education, but was removed at the 2012 reshuffle in order for David Laws to return to the Government and to focus on developing her local profile in a very marginal seat.

Personal Overview - Experienced local politician who successfully gained the Brent & Harrow seat from the Conservatives in 2008 defying the national trend. He is a former Leader of Harrow BC and has been politically active in the area for 30 years. Has a distinctive background as the son of a former freedom fighter in India. He has stated that he joined the Labour Party due to his 'deep socialist beliefs' and that this encouraged him to become active in working with voluntary organisations in his local area. locally, he has also shown interest in planning and regeneration projects, he was involved in the Harrow Town Centre Regeneration and on the Wembley Stadium project (in consultation with Harrow Council and the neighbouring Authority to Brent). He has also worked on strategic issues within London such as the London Olympics and the Mayor's London Plan (through the West London Alliance of 6 West London Boroughs including Harrow).
