Appearing in a staggering 82 plays and directing a further 12, it’s fair to say Annette Toms has earned the right to have some fun. So for her 13th production, Annette has chosen to steer Ray Cooney’s madcap farce, Out of Order.

“I just like to hear people laughing,“ says Annette, who has lived in Bedmond all her life and made her Abbots Langley Players debut with Noel Coward’s Relative Values in 1965.

“There’s lots of dropping of trousers and towels and women flitting about in negligees,“ adds Annette. “There are windows coming down on people’s heads and doors bursting open, which is very difficult to sort out technically.“

The show centres on the extra-marital shenanigans of a married junior government minister, who has orchestrated a liaison with Jane, the object of his desires at a suitably impressive hotel near the Houses of Parliament. The trouble is, Jane just happens to be the personal secretary to the Leader of the Opposition and also has an insanely jealous husband.

Brian Hibberd plays the wayward minister and David Powell is George Pigden, the long-suffering Parliamentary Secretary. Siobhan O’Hara is Jane; while Barbara Johnson and Graham Ford play the wronged spouses, Pamela and Ronnie.

Annette says getting the cast just right was paramount to her production.

“I’ve always thought it was a good play, but I had to wait until the right people had appeared. You have to choose a play for the people you’ve got, I always think.“

Out of Order is at Henderson Hall, High St, Abbots Langley from March 14-17 at 8pm with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm.
