Harrow performing arts company tackles knife crime

Reworking the words of Shakespeare for a modern audience, Bearfoot School of Performing Arts, in conjuction with Harrow Council, is hoping to tackle issues such as knife crime and other social problems of concern to teenagers. The play, Julius Caesar for the Here and Now! is currently available on tour to schools in the Harrow area.

Sally Worner, director of Bearfoot, says: “By making Julius Caesar relevant to modern day we are able to tackle current youth issues such as knife crime, gangs and the desire to be the best.”

Based at Harrow Arts Centre in Hatch End and specialising in dance, drama and musical theatre, Bearfoot uses modern themes, settings and language to make the play more accessible to young people.

The cast features local young people aged from 13 to 19 and together they have been exploring the issues raised in the play such as relationships, violence and the drawbacks of power and putting them into a modern context.
