Reciting Shakespeare is no mean feat for a youth theatre and it’s even more difficult if you’re wearing a bodysuit and rollerskates, but still the Pump House Youth Theatre presented a highly entertaining version of Bob Carlton’s witty, award-winning musical.

There are two casts for the show and last Saturday’s matinee was given by the ‘Out Cast’ featuring Hollie Sullivan as the the skating robot Ariel. Hollie’s singing and stage presence entirely complimented the role which calls for a confident performer, as does the job of narrating the whole production, which fell to a highly competent Oliver Sharman.

The paring of brothers Calum and Barney Littley as Cookie and the Captain respectively was inspired and Mat Slomka gave a brilliantly unhinged edge to the part of Prospero. Katy Grantham was also suffienciently naive yet fulsome as his daughter Miranda. Hitting all the high notes was Isha Sommariva, whose renditions of Gloria and It’s A Man’s World were worthy of an X Factor judge’s thumbs up.

The clever set and funny film footage of a tenticled monster rounded off a very enjoyable experience.
