I was going to try and resist opening this article with a play on Reasons To Be Cheerful (Part 3), one of the best known tracks by The Blockheads, Ian Dury’s former band who come to Harpenden this
month. But then came this while speaking to the song‘s co-author Chaz Jankel: “Oh look at that, a fiver has just climbed my foot!“ he says in surprise. “That‘s amazing. I’m walking down the street
and a fiver is just rolling down the street. A reason to feel cheerful, hey?!“ A very good reason, and there are more: the guitarist and keyboard player‘s band have been enjoying a renaissance of
late with 2010‘s biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. Reasons To Be Cheerful, a stage musical about the band and its fans has just completed a national tour. The Blockheads, the group Chaz
formed with Ian Dury, celebrate their 35th anniversary this year. Less cheerfully, this year also marks what would have been Ian Dury‘s 70th birthday.
