The big picture: Great to see the one and only Clint Eastwood back on the big screen in a starring role. Here he plays Walt Kowalski, an embittered widower and war veteran who now lives in the past. When his shy, young Korean neighbour tries to steal his gleaming 1972 Ford Gran Torino, Waltʼs immediate reaction is to teach him a lesson – but it becomes apparent that the teenager was forced to act by local gangs who behave as if the neighbourhood belongs to them. Eastwood directs as well as stars in this instant classic.

The big picture: Fantasy thriller starring Eva Green, Ryan Phillippe, Sam Riley and Bernard Hill. Residing between the parallel worlds of contemporary London and the futuristic Meanwhile City, the lives of four lost souls become intertwined by fate, romance and tragedy. As the two worlds collide, a single bullet determines the destiny of all four characters. The film was shot on locations including Greenwich, South Kensington and Holborn.

CHE: PART 2 (15)
The big picture: The second chapter of Steven Soderberghʼs epic story of ʻCheʼ Guevara, splendidly played by Benicio del Toro, who previously starred in Soderberghʼs Traffic. After the Cuban Revolution, Che is at the height of his fame and power. Then he disappears, re-emerging incognito in Bolivia, where he organises a small group of Cuban comrades and Bolivian recruits to start the great Latin American Revolution. Itʼs a pulsating tale of tenacity, idealism, guerilla warfare and sacrifice – a glimpse of the man behind the icon.

The big picture: Adrenaline-pumping sci-fi thriller from Scottish director, Paul McGuigan. Nick (Chris Evans) and Cassie (Dakota Fanning) are among a group of special individuals who have inherited psychic abilities that originated from human experiments conducted by the Nazis during World War II. They find themselves on the run from Carver (Djimon Hounsou) and his forces, who work for a secret government agency determined to hunt them down to harness their telekinetic powers for evil.

ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL (15)
The big picture: At 14, two school friends made a pact to rock together forever – and they meant it. Yes, really. Robb and Steve formed a band, Anvil, which became the ʻdemigods of Canadian metalʼ, releasing 1982ʼs Metal on Metal that sold millions of records. But Anvilʼs career then nosedived into obscurity. Now, 26 years on, documentary director Sacha Gervasi, who worked as a roadie for the band, provides a funny yet heart-rending account of their last-ditch quest for fame and fortune.

The big picture: Compelling tale of sex, violence, race and rock n roll in 1950ʼs Chicago. Cadillac Records charts the exciting but turbulent lives of some of Americaʼs musical legends, including Muddy Waters, Little Water and Howlinʼ Wolf, Etta James and Chuck Berry. Written and directed by Darnell Martin, the film stars Adrien Brody (below), Beyonce Knowles and Mos Def.

CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC
The big picture: Credit where itʼs due! In glamorous New York, Rebecca (Isla Fisher) is a fun-loving girl whoʼs really good at shopping – a bit too good, perhaps, and her debts pile up. She dreams of working for her favourite fashion magazine but canʼt get her foot in the door – until, ironically, she gets a job as an advice columnist on a financial magazine published by the same company. As her dreams finally come true, Rebecca has to go to ever more extreme lengths to stop her past from spoiling her future. If you loved Murielʼs Wedding and My Best Friendʼs Wedding, donʼt miss this latest romcom from PJ Hogan, who directed both of them.
