Cllr John Nickolay

THE new mayor for Harrow has pledged to maintain "harmonious relations" in the town writes David Lewis.

Councillor John Nickolay, who has lived in Harrow for 73 years, took up his new role at a ceremony at the Civic Centre, Harrow, last night.

He says his attention will be focused on keeping up good community relations in the area.

He said: "We don't want anything to jeopardise the way Harrow is working. As mayor, I want to make sure that that nothing prejudices harmonious relations in Harrow."

He named his mayoral charity as the Welldon Activity Group in Harrow, which helps residents with special needs. He said: "The centre is run by volunteers and we are hoping that local businesses will rally round and help raise money for this important centre in Harrow."

Cllr Nickolay was first elected to Harrow Council in 1964 and lost his seat seven years later. He had to wait 27 years to get re-elected.

The father-of-four also has a number of interests outside of politics. He is a keen sports fan, especially football. He is a Chelsea fan but was also very happy to see local teams Harrow Borough and Wealdstone avoiding the drop from the Ryman Premier league.

He is also a follower of ice hockey and speedway but admits these are difficult to follow most of the time.
