Officers will never be forgotten by colleagues or the community of Harrow

Posted on 10:12am Monday 27th February 2012

This week the Mayor of Harrow and the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, John Purnell attended Harrow Police Station to unveil a plaque to Harrow police officers who have passed away in the last three years. This was a very sad occasion, but also an opportunity to celebrate the enormous commitment police officers have made to Harrow. I was particularly moved by Catriona Swadling who attended with her sisters and PC Ian Swadlings's parents. PC Ian Swadling died when he came off his motorcycle last year on his way home after completing his late turn shift. Catriona has been so incredibly brave. Ian left a three year old son, Jack and a daughter, Olivia who was born after his death. I reassured the families that PC Ian Swadling would never be forgotten by his colleagues or the community of Harrow. Catriona is an amazing woman with an fantastic family and I was pleased to meet her sisters and nephews and nieces at the unvelling of the plaque.

Harrow Officers awarded Commissioner's Commendations

Posted on 8:34am Monday 20th February 2012

I was satisfied to see that at Harrow Crown Court this week, 19-year-old Sirajdin Chiragh of Paulhan Road, Kenton was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in jail for nasty assault on a brilliant first class honours student in an unprovoked incident in July last year. The student has lost the vision in one eye and Chiragh will have now have a considerable amount of time to contemplate his cowardly attack in prison. Thankfully incidents like this are very rare in Harrow, but nevertheless it is important that we deal with the criminals who carry out these attacks. PC Ali Plant was the officer in the charge of this case and did an excellent job in securing a successful conviction.

Celebrating our Neighbourhood Champions

It's always a pleasure to be sharing positive news, and I was delighted to start the week by thanking PC Glen Johnson for the excellent way in which he handled a recent case of domestic violence. Glen used his experience and drew on his extensive local knowledge to ensure that the victim was fully supported throughout the case and aware of the support services available to her. He also worked closely with the Mental Health team in ensuring that the suspect was dealt appropriately.
