A momentous week for Harrow and London
12:00am Monday 30th July 2012 in Blogs By Dal Babu
This has been a momentous week for Harrow and London. The Olympic torch's journey throughout the country attracted huge crowds as many of us wanted to be part of the 2012 Olympic Games and Harrow was no exception. There was a great sense of community spirit as the people of Harrow amassed to watch the torch wend its way through the borough. The event went off without incident and the flame, thankfully still burning, safely left the borough and headed on towards Brent for the next leg of its journey.
A few weeks ago Harrow officers and staff had the opportunity to have their photograph taken with an Olympic torch. PC Alan Humphries, a keen photographer in his spare time, came into work on his day off to take photographs of his colleagues for posterity. PC Humphries is a keen sportsman and recently ran in the London Marathon. I was teasing him that I beat his time despite his youth!
I presented PC Mark Johnson, who completed his two year probationary period this week, with his Confirmation Certificate. PC Johnson was wearing the new Metropolitan Police Service uniform, which is being rolled out across London. The new uniform is more practical and durable than the traditional one and officers will be making the transition to the new kit over the next month.
At long last we are seeing some summer weather. Please follow these simple crime prevention tips to avoid your house being burgled:
Ensure windows are shut at night (particularly during hot weather.)
Ensure you lock your doors properly when you leave your home.
Ensure you leave a light/radio on when you leave your home.
I was out on patrol with PC Alex Flaherty this week and we had an interesting evening dealing with a call to a suspected gas leak near the route of the Olympic torch . Fortunately this was a false alarm and we passed on the information to the gas board. I then attended a call of a man on a roof, from a member of the public who had concerns over is welfare. PC Flaherty and I climbed on to the roof and persuaded the man to come inside and he was taken to hospital. I was impressed with PC Flaherty's practical common sense approach and policing skills.
I congratulated DC Richard Cafferty and Tony Power who works in our Witness Care Unit who both received a letter of thanks this week from the family of a victim of crime. The family were extremely grateful for the professional way in which their case was dealt with and the positive outcome at court where the defendant received 8 years for an unprovoked attack. Victim care is high on our agenda at Harrow and it's always a pleasure to receive and share such positive news.
Frank Cannon has been a loyal and dedicated member of the Metropolitan Police Special Constabulary since 2006 and is an integral part of Wealdstone and Marlborough Safer Neighbourhoods teams. Frank is a competent and mature officer who works regularly with the team and is always available when called upon at short notice to assist with operations. Frank has assisted in plain clothes operations and warrants and been actively involved with arrests such as Operation Hawk when two males were arrested and subsequent arrest made for dealing cannabis and possession. Frank works as an engineer at Harrow Council.
